Summer TV to See

Summer TVSummer is almost upon us and alot of the good tv shows are wrapping up for the season (Lost, How I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad, South Park… just to name a few). So what’s there to look forward to on the boob-tube this summer? Well from what I can see.. not a whole lot. It’s definitely slim pickings until the fall season when most of the big hits are scheduled to return.

On the bright side; the lack of tv shows is a positive thing, nothing to distract you from enjoying all the nice sunny weather. However for those occasional rainy days and boring summer nights when you find a lack of booze and BBQs here are some of the shows you can look forward to.

J.J. Abrams responds to Trekkies

Star Trek XIAfter opening up to huge numbers, it’s apparent the new Star Trek movie is a hit amongst Trekkies and non-fans alike. However director (and Lost creator) J.J. Abrams is apparently catching some heat from the die-hard Trekkies who have been obsessing, dissecting, and theorizing about the film.

The theories range from interesting to ridiculous. Abrams, apparently eager to dismiss some of these theories recently spoke out to MTV. If you have not seen the movie yet, or are extremely bored by Star Trek minutiae you may want to skip the rest of this article.

The “Abrams Sabotaged Shatner” Theory: Some Trekkies have postulated that the new movie’s inclusion of the Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage” is a subtle dig at the original Captain Kirk, who has been known to mispronounce the word as “sabotaage.”

Taiwan National Stadium, a solar powerhouse

Taiwan Solar StadiumTaiwan recently finished construction on an incredible solar-powered stadium that will generate 100% of its electricity from photovoltaic technology! Designed by Toyo Ito, the dragon-shaped 50,000 seat arena is clad in 8,844 solar panels that illuminate the track and field with 3,300 lux. The project will officially welcome the 2009 World Games, whick kicks-off in under a month. to go. Not only does the solar system provide electricity during the games, but the surplus energy will also be sold during the non-game period. On days where the stadium is not being used, the Taiwanese government plans to feed the extra energy into the local grid, where it will meet almost 80% of the neighboring area’s energy requirements.

Built upon a clear area of approximately 19 hectares, nearly 7 hectares has been reserved for the development of integrated public green spaces, bike paths, sports parks, and an ecological pond. Additionally, all of the plants occupying the area before construction were transplanted. Mother Nature definitely wants to mouth-kiss the developers of this stadium underneath the bleachers.

YouTube hit with “Porn Day”

YouTube Hit With PornYouTube was busy deleting porn videos on Wednesday after users of forums at a rival site and an imageboard site declared a “Porn Day” campaign against the popular video service.

The forums at video site eBaum’s World and 4chan organized the mass porn “carpet bombing” on YouTube, according to Ars Technica.

YouTube has been removing the videos as fast as it can, but even videos that are removed are still showing up in search results with explicit images in the thumbnails, the report said.

It could take a couple of days for all the explicit results to be removed from the search results, Google spokesman Scott Rubin told Ars Technica.

In a phone interview with CNET News late on Wednesday, Rubin said that in addition to the porn videos were removed as soon as community members alert YouTube to them, certain channels where the posters were bragging about the campaign and listing the videos were being disabled.

Coffee with a little less guilt.

CoffeeGood news coffee drinkers! I recently wrote an article suggesting that switching from coffee to tea as your drink of choice was a healthy move. However some new research shows that older, negative studies often failed to differentiate the effects of coffee and cigarettes simply because so many coffee drinkers were also smokers.

Don’t get too excited, coffee isn’t exactly a “health” drink but it is a good beverage choice. Make sure you’re drinking FILTERED coffee; the filter removes a substance called cafestol, which boosts “bad” cholesterol (LDL). Some Scandinavian coffee is made in French presses and is not filtered.

Eminem – Relapse

Eminem - RelapseAfter four years away from the music industry Eminem is back with his much anticipated 6th album Relapse. The album is aptly titled as Eminem seems to have relapsed into past habits. This album is filled with familiar references to his pill-popping mother (My Mom), his relationship with Mariah Carey (Bagpipes from Bagdad), Christopher Reeves jokes (Medicine Ball), and his crazy urges to murder (3am, Stay Wide Awake). Is he stuck in the past? Perhaps somewhat, but I think the song Beautiful reveals some insight into an artist struggling with a lack of creativity and motivation.

MSTRKRFT – Fist Of God

MSTRKRFT - Fist Of GodMSTRKRFT (pronounced “Master-craft”) are an electronic music group from Toronto, Canada. Fist Of God is their second album, following up their first album The Look
which was released in 2006. Fist of God is a high energy slap in the face of electronic, pop and rap vocals. This is not your grandma’s techno album. Featuring guest rappers Lil’ Mo, NORE, E-40, Ghostface Killah & Freeway just to name a few.

Keep in mind this album is dance music so don’t expect deep thought-provoking intelligent lyrics, the music is the main focus. Sadly you can’t help but notice that a lot of the songs on this album have a near identical sound to them, so about 4 tracks deep into listening you might find yourself feeling like this whole album is just one long techno track.

Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy

Seth Macfarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon ComedySeth Macfarlane is the creator of such hit shows as Family Guy, American Dad and the upcoming Family Guy spin-off  The Cleveland Show. Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy is a new uncensored video which I can best describe as Family Guy meets WarioWare meets HBO. If you’ve ever watched Family Guy you’re certainly familiar with the constant cut-away sketches and flashbacks. This video is basically a collection of these style of shorts presented in a rapid-fire fashion. Only the material and language is way more explicit. Expect plenty of swearing, poop, racism, religion and sex jokes.

Fans of Macfarlane and politically incorrect humor will no doubt love this video. There are a lot of pop-culture references and celebrity parodies.

Kick Coffee… Go Green

Green TeaAlright, hear me out. I’m not saying you should give up coffee completely. I love coffee, and switching was not easy. There are just too many compelling health benefits to not consider the switch. Like most people I need cream and sugar to drink my coffee, which might not seem like a big deal. The truth is that high sugar and fat amounts in our diet is a main contributer to obesity and health problems in North America.

I understand that the large kick of caffeine is what is appealing about coffee. But, when all that caffeine and sugar starts to wear off it can leave you feeling drained. And most people’s solution to the coffee crash, more coffee of course. People with long work days find themselves ingesting a lot more caffeine (and sugar and fat in some cases) than is healthy for a single day. An 8 oz cup, coffee can have about 100 mg of caffeine where green tea only has about 20 mg of caffeine. The FDA suggests you keep from having any more than 200 – 300 mg of caffeine per day, depending on what report you find. Two cups of coffee gets you to that limit where as several cups of green tea still keeps you far from the limit and allows you to drink it all day.
