What do you get when you put Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, David Zayas, Giselle Itié, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a film together? Exactly what you’d expect — a huge budget, lots of explosions, non-stop fighting and mostly mediocre acting talent. All the ingrediants for a great cheesey, mindless action film.

It’s called The Expendables. It’s about a team of the world’s most dangerous and highly-trained mercenaries who go on a mission to South America to overthrow and assassinate a powerful, evil dictator and his army, who has been causing devastation, chaos and torture for the last twenty years.

In a recent interview on an Italian talk show Quentin Tarantino was asked about a couple of sequel possibilities. He said “maybe” to a Inglorious Basterds prequel, “uh, no…it’ll never happen” to a Pulp Fiction sequel and then, and this is the important part, says “but you didn’t ask the third thing. Would I ever do a third…a Kill Bill, Volume 3?” The woman looks taken aback, then asks the question. Will you do Kill Bill 3? “Yes!” he replies — and the crowd goes wild.

There’s been a lot of talk of an anime film, echoing the awesome sequence of the origin of Lucy Liu’s O-Ren Ishii which would be an interesting turn for Tarantino. There is evidence from Tarantino himself that he wants to return to the world in 15 years to pick up the story of the daughter of the Bride, B.B.  being hunted by Nikki, the daughter of Vernita Green, who witnessed death of her mother at the hands of The Bride.

District 9 is an upcoming science fiction film produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp. I remember seeing an earlier trailer for this movie and not knowing what to make of it — this new trailer looks great.  This new movie is based on Alive in Joburg (video), a short film directed by Neill Blomkamp, Sharlto Copley, Simon Hansen and Shanon Worley. The title is influenced by real life District Six, Cape Town. Copley also portrayed one of the interviewed policemen. The short film is about aliens landing in South Africa and becoming confined to a specific area and forced to work.

In the movie, aliens make first contact with Earth twenty-eight years prior while humanity waited for the hostile attack or for giant advances in technology, though neither came. Instead, the aliens that arrived were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them. Patience over the alien situation ran out and control over them was contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare. MNU stands to receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ advanced weaponry work.

MNU, thus far, has failed in making the alien weaponry work, for activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. Tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable, for he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Van der Merwe becomes ostracized and friendless and comes to hide in District 9.

A teaser trailer was just released and it looks pretty crazy– definitely what you’d expect from a Tim Burton film. But don’t take my word for it, have a look for yourself:

The theories range from interesting to ridiculous. Abrams, apparently eager to dismiss some of these theories recently spoke out to MTV. If you have not seen the movie yet, or are extremely bored by Star Trek minutiae you may want to skip the rest of this article.

The “Abrams Sabotaged Shatner” Theory: Some Trekkies have postulated that the new movie’s inclusion of the Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage” is a subtle dig at the original Captain Kirk, who has been known to mispronounce the word as “sabotaage.”

J.J. Abrams response: “Yes, I have heard that theory,” laughed Abrams. “It was so funny when I heard it. I wish I could say it was done on purpose, but it was not. I just dig the song.”

The “Throw the Old ‘Trek’ Off a Cliff” Theory: In the same scene as the “Sabotage” song, a young James T. Kirk drives a ’60s-era Corvette over a cliff, leaping out at the last minute. Some fans believe that the car is from 1966 — the year “Trek” came on the air — and that it represents a statement about the new film throwing away the trappings of the classic show.

J.J. Abrams response: “I’m not sure if it was a ’66,” Abrams said of the Corvette. “But that was also the year that I was born, so I wouldn’t want to do that to the year, for personal reasons. No, the idea was to show the renegade, young Kirk and have a wildly anachronistic scene where you had an earthbound, almost back-looking scene combined with a forward-looking futuristic scene technologically. It had nothing to do with that kind of metaphor.”

The “Kelvin Crew Knows Who Romulans Are” Theory: In the classic “Trek” series, humans didn’t know what Romulans looked like prior to Captain Kirk’s time; in the new film, a Romulan craft kills the humans aboard the U.S.S. Kelvin. According to one fan theory, the attack on the Kelvin leads to a slip-up by Abrams, because the human crew recognize their attackers as Romulans.

J.J. Abrams response: “It’s not mentioned in the scene on the Kelvin, but they are aware of it,” Abrams confirmed, agreeing with the sharp-sighted fans. “Because later in the movie, Kirk mentions that they were Romulan. And we very purposely begin the film with a moment that, for fans of ‘Star Trek,’ is a left turn from the timeline they are familiar with.” For anyone who thinks they “caught” Abrams, however, the director is quick to point out the opposite. “For fans of ‘Trek,’ yes, the Romulans appearing breaks with what is known to be ‘Trek’ canon. But that is on purpose.”

The “Sleeker, Faster Response” Theory: If the new “Trek” gives us the Enterprise equivalent of a Blu-Ray disk, then the ship on the original “Trek” looks like a Betamax tape. One fan theory is that the attack on the Kelvin forced the Federation to build sleeker, faster spacecraft in the movie’s new reality.

J.J. Abrams response: “Right,” agreed Abrams. “The idea of the story is that at the beginning of the film something happens that changes the course of history. They cross paths with this futuristic ship, and it changes everything that would’ve been the classic series ‘Trek’ fans are familiar with. … One could argue that, based on the readings they got from the [Romulan] ship that showed up, it inspired ideas and technology that wouldn’t have advanced otherwise.” Hence, the huge difference between the old Enterprise and his version. “On the one hand, you could answer the question by saying that history got a boost, an adjustment, from this moment at the beginning of the film,” he grinned. “And if you don’t want to answer the question, you could say it’s just a movie.”

So there you have it Star Trek nerds, now go outside any get some sunshine already damnitt!

Fans of Macfarlane and politically incorrect humor will no doubt love this video. There are a lot of pop-culture references and celebrity parodies.

There are a few sketches that run a little long with no real laugh payoffs, similar to a bad SNL skit. Some examples of this are a short in which Fred Flintstone uses a public washroom; and a Scottish man who can’t watch a movie without shouting at the screen.

And while most of the content is very funny, the video itself runs a bit on the short side at only 53 minutes. The bare-bones DVD extras consist primarily of footage from a Cavalcade launch party in which guests are asked what “cavalcade” means, and most of them haven’t a clue.

Priced at around $15, some may be disappointed by the short running time and lackluster extras. If you’re not a diehard Seth Macfarlane fan or you’re unsure if this “raunchy” material is for you; I would recommend renting this video before purchasing.
